“Prostate cancer is blokes’ breast cancer” is a phrase being bandied about by The Prostate Cancer Charity. Its Annual Report and Accounts opens with the story of a journalist and his wife, who, within an hour, had been told that they had prostate cancer and breast cancer, respectively. The feeling within the charity (and elsewhere) is that breast cancer receives much more attention (and money) than prostate cancer.
When faced with employers, clubs and other organisations fundraising for breast cancer, it is reasonable for anyone, man or woman, to ask what is being done for men.
Sone annual reports can be turgid. The Prostate Cancer Charity tackles the subject under a variety of headings – from research, support and information, to policy and campaigning. It sets out under each heading what it said it would do, what it actually did in 2006/7, and what it will do in 2007/8. That is straightforward, and, no doubt, also helps the charity to keep on track.
One fly in the ointment is ‘fundraising costs’ – put at £1,553,000 from total income of £4,454,000.
