Not a pen, pencil, etc – but a crutch with the appeal letter from Handicap International: albeit a miniature bamboo crutch taped to the letter.
While the letter came from Cambodia (with a postage stamp commemorating the organisation’s 25th anniversary), and was signed by the Cambodian Programme Director, donations go to a Home Counties UK address, and qualify for Gift Aid.
This, of course, is all part of the move by many UK-based agencies to try to give a feel for the need, by asking staff at the sharp end to put their names to appeal letters. I use that phrase because, in some cases, it appears as though the actual text has been compiled by people whose job it is to touch the heartstrings of donors, rather than the person getting on with the work.
