Gone are the days when Guide Dogs appeared to be well financed, and so a practical matter-of-fact letter arrives. It explains that Guide Dogs makes a lifelong commitment to every guide dog owner to provide them with a guide dog, and ongoing support, for as long as they need. For a blind or partially sighted person, such ownership can begin in their teens, and last until they are in their eighties – with each dog giving about six years’ service. And “each puppy costs £5,000 to train and raise in its first critical year”.
Full marks for explaining what is involved and for making the point that charity does not receive any statutory funding.
