It’s not always easy, these days, to tell whether a person is male or female, just from their name. The British Forces Foundation, however, writing to us with a well-known first name, has taken the precaution of putting Mr in the address and Dear Ms in the salutation, thus covering both possibilities

Like some of the other charities, it acknowledges that times are not easy for donors. The letter starts: “These times are tough for everyone, but no one has it tougher than British troops serving on the front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq.”  The charity goes on to make it clear that it exists to boost the morale and improve the welfare of serving troops all over the world. It points out that its core activity is putting on top quality entertainment shows – with the production costs funded solely by public donations, and the big names being persuaded to perform for free.
