You name it and, these days, there seems to be a charity for it. You might not think that grass needs its own charity, but The Grasslands Trust was set up in 2002, and has an annual turnover in the region of £250,000. Its aim is to preserve ancient grasslands – with 98 per cent having been destroyed in the past 70 years. The letter (asking for £2,000!) points out that intensive farming practices, neglect and development are the biggest threats.
The accompanying paperwork shows that funds have been forthcoming from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and also Landfill Tax, Natural England and other forms of government funding. Bank interest was £4,800 in the latest accounts. That is likely to take a sharp knock in the future!
The charity’s newsletter (largely concerned with work in Wales) has been funded by the Welsh Assembly – and so is printed in Welsh and English.
