Quite rightly, donors are concerned about funds being used properly and not being wasted. Village Water is a charity which provides fresh water and sanitation for rural communities in Zambia. After water pumps have been isntalled, there is the need to keep them in good working order. Each year, a locally employed Village Water Field Officer checks that the well is still working and that there is sufficient sanitation installed.
Here a ’stick and carrot’ approach is employed. If all is well, the charity buys a highly-prized hand-stitched football (from local Zambian charity Alive and Kicking) for the villagers. If things are going badly, local field workers talk to the local community ‘and work with them to encourage a renewed effort’.
