Many ‘regular’ donors have made arrangements for Gift Aid to be claimed ‘in bulk’, using the Charities Aid Foundation, or a similar facility, so that, in effect, it is the gross amount (less any adminitration costs) which goes to their chosen charities. Others sign up for Gift Aid on donation forms; and on-line sites generally incorporate the facility.
For door-to-door collections, this month Christian Aid is again offering Gift Aid with its envelopes – which is great. How nice it would be if other assiduous doorstep collectors, such as RNLI and Royal British Legion, could take it on board. (I accept that it would be difficult for ’street corner’ collectors).
It is not as if door-to-door collections are all ’small coins’. Often, notes are pulled out of wallets and I, for one, don’t like to see the potential tax recovery being missed. I know may charities would like to have a different system for claiming Gift Aid – but that may not necessarily come about.
