A ‘catch all’ application for funds comes from the RSPCA. An appealing item of card, which is well laid out, asks for a cheque/PO, credit card payment – or up to £3 in pound coins. There are slots in the card where the coins can be stuck. My guess is that quite a numbr of people will give one or more coins, put the card in the Freepost envelope, and send it off.
This may be on much the same basis as when I call, once a year, on the houses in my neighbourhood (for a completely different charity). A coin or two is given – sometimes, I feel, to salve a conscience.
On principle, however, I am against sending coins through the post. I suppose the RSPCA can say that, if some go astray (nobody will ever know how many), it still does not do too badly. I happen not to support that approach.
