Posting Coins

I hoped we had heard the last of mailings asking people to put coins in the post to a charity. The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, however, is still using this approach. And I can see the attraction: it is very much like someone calling at the door with a collecting tin, and the householder popping one or two coins into the tin (although the ‘ask’ is for three x £1 coins, which may be more than would go in such a tin). By mail, a charity can ask for a specific sum – which would be entirely out of place for a house-to-house collector.

If cheques to HMRC ‘go astray’ in the post (as we know that they genuinely do), how much more likely is it that coins will be a source of extra income for some unscrupulous person. Most charities try to deter donors from sending cash through the post – for good reason. Here is one encouraging such a practice.

Wow – now that’s perspective! I think we often react in agreement or disagreement because of our emotions, but hearing another side, passionately presented, really makes us think!
