When I remonstrate with people about my disapproval for certain methods of fundraising, often the response is: “But it works!” No doubt that would be the answer The Alternative Animal Sanctuary would give.
It sends out a small envelope with a card with three slots – each of which will accommodate a £1 coin. There is a form for Gift Aid. And I am pleased to see that donors can choose to receive more information about the Sanctuary’s work, or can opt out of receiving further mailings. And donors can choose for their details not to be passed to other organisations.
All that, of course, is very much more efficient than somebody standing on a street corner shaking a collecting tin.
Even so, the idea of encouraging donors to send cash through the post – when so many other organisations (rightly, in my view) do their utmost to discourage the practice – sets my teeth on edge. They have not received a response from this household.
