Most charities try to prevent donors from sending coins in the post. Not so for The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association – which spends about £70 million a year. It is distributing leaflets with envelopes to take a card – on to which one is invited to stick up to three £1 coins.
I suspect plenty of people will know what is in these reply-paid envelopes of an unusual size. And so there is a good chance of coins going astray – and nobody being any the wiser.
I know that, for many people, whose size of gift is likely to be less than £5, the easiest way to send money is by putting coins in the post. But my view is that it is not something which should be encouraged by reputable charities. My guess is that, of the £70 million or so being spent by Guide Dogs each year, a relatively small proportion is contributed in £1 coins through the post. But I could be wrong.
