I first got to know about this charity when searching for information about Derren Brown and it was one of the links on his website as he is their patron.
The parrot sanctuary is situated in Linconshire about 15-20 mins away from Skegness so its ideally situated for a visit if your on the way to the beach. It is clearly signposted so you have no problems finding the place and there is ample parking facilities.
I must admit I was fairly ignorant about parrots and often thought about keeping one on a whim. The visit to this place certainly opened my eyes to the amount of time, love and attention these beautiful creatures need and the unfortunate fates some of these birds encountered when people bought them and neglected them both physically and mentally.
The sanctuary is geared up to rehabilitation and educating the public so the lives of these birds are happier and more fulfilled. It is run by a team of dedicated staff and I was very impressed by the time spent by them chatting and answering questions from the general public, so many times you go to places like this and you are left to wander round and you can sometimes leave disappointed but the staff were very approachable and it added to the enjoyment of the day.
There are plenty of activities for the children including trampolines, walk-through aviary , bunny village and the parrotdise hotel were you can interact with the parrots which the kids will love!
There is a cafe there or picnic facilities so it really is a good day out were you can have fun and learn a few facts as well. The admission fees are very reasonable too!
Unfortunately due to the great British weather visitors are down by 65% compared to last year.
Thankfully the birds are kept fed by the fundraising scheme which I contribute to SPONSAPOLL. This is done as a monthly direct debit and in return you get regular newsletters updating you about the sanctuary plus ( and I think this is a great bonus) you get a season ticket which entitles one person to get into the sanctuary free of charge.
I recommend looking at their website. Its very professionally put together and covers most questions you need answering the address is www.parrotsanctuary.co.uk
