Walking through Kettering the other day head down trying to avoid the long line of people selling windows, car recovery policies, digital tv and home insurance policies I bumped into a nice young man who was raising awareness for the charity SIGHTSAVERS INTERNATIONAL.I spent five minutes listening to him tell me about the three main causes of blindness in the developing countries (namely cataracts, trachoma and river blindness) and for 40p a week I could help by paying for operations to restore sight to many people. I was keen to help but my enthusiasm disappeared when asked for my bank details. I’m very wary about giving my details out so asked if I could have some details of the charity and I would be only too happy to send a donation. The guy gave me a website address and I’ve checked it out and sent a donation.
My point is who in their right mind would give their details out to a stranger on a high street were anybody could be listening? This gent had a colleague a little further up the road. I’m sure they were not canvassing for free so I wonder if the few people they recruited justifies the expense of sending them out on the street. It seems a waste of resources to me and maybe the charity should rethink its strategy.
