I have just received another mailing, one of several this year, from the Sweepstakes Audit Committee of the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation. The pack contains three sheets of A4 explaining the competition together with prize stickers for selection of prizes (top prize a car or £20,000) but only includes a very brief section on the symptoms of diabetes. So my first point is that I would like to understand more about the charity which I am being asked to support. Sadly diabetes, I suppose is not emotive (as is cancer for example) so the need for “exciting” inducements is understood. The inclusion of an affidavit (to add to the excitement or to impress the gullible) for the donor to sign if interesting. I always believed that an affidavit was made upon oath before a person authorised to administer oaths but I suppose it adds an air of mystery. As well as wanting to know more about the charity before donating I would like to have answers to the following questions:

How many people are employed on the campaign?
What percentage of the money raised is swallowed in costs?
How much is it anticipated will be available to benefit those suffering from diabetes?
