In the words of Margaret Mead “Never doubt that a small group of a committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has”. Of course the committed citizens to whom Margaret Mead refers are usually the trustees of a charity so it is interesting to read an appeal from a charity which has no full time employees, has no middle-men and sends out an appeal which is signed by a trustee. The final sentence of the letter refers to “whatever sum you feel able to donate”, a gentle approach which appeals to me.
The appeal was informative too. I was aware of course, who could not be, of the mess which exists in Zimbabwe (though this is not the place to discuss colonialism/post colonialism in that sorry country) but I had never considered the plight of the 8,000 mainly British old age pensioners who are trying the exist in Zimbabwe on pensions against 4,000% inflation, yet another group who are on the margins of society.
Some will consider that these people are not the most worthy cause to whom to donate charitable funds but is it not interesting that wherever a need is identified which is not being met by statutory means there will always be a group of committed citizens to try and do something about it.
