Having been away from home for three weeks I returned to find 49 charity appeals. It is impossible to respond to them all but seeing so many together reinforces my view that the world would be an infinitely poorer place without them, supporting as they do many in this country and across the world who are in need. From Unicef came a letter apologising for sending an earlier letter which had contained the sentence “I know that you have recently begun to support Unicef” whereas you have been a supporter for some years. I suppose the organisation had felt it necessary to apologise for this simple error because they had been criticised. I needed no apology and regret the waste of resources caused by unnecessary complaints.
22 of the appeals were for charities trying to help in various parts of the world which are suffering because of war or other forms of manmade disaster. Would that those whom we elect to oversee our affairs could find solutions and those who force themselves into positions of power did so for the right reasons.
I am sure the postbag will continue to grow but I will try to look at some of the 49 in detail.
