A highly informative leaflet from the Smile Train, a charity which exists to help children born with cleft lip and pallet.  One of the best explanatory papers I have seen accompanying an appeal containing clear but very simple scientific information explaining the possible causes, defining the associated problems and explaining how effective surgery can be while admitting that problems associated with the phenomenon are difficult to address.  However, in a world where beauty seems to be so important the fact that some relief has been brought to sufferers in almost 70 countries with a quarter of a million operations carried out in 7 years is very impressive.  The appeal is unemotional but at least in this reader before and after photographs brought an emotional response as well as a small donation.
