SANACHARA (the Nepali word for news) is the title of the newsletter of the Ghurkha Welfare Trust. The newsletter records the death of Havildar Dhandhaeta who was a member of the Ghurkha Rifles and fought on the side of the British in the Second World War earning the Victoria Cross. The newsletter is well written and contains a number of interesting articles which give an insight into the lives of the survivors of the Ghurkha Regiments. One fascinating and chastening story concerns the accidental burning down of an ex-Ghurkha founders’ home. It is chastening because a grant of £700 enabled the family, widow and grandchildren of the Ghurkha to completely rebuild the house. There has been considerable political discussion in recent years about our country’s responsibility to former Ghurkhas and their families and I hope that realistic state support is available but I also hope that the Ghurkha Welfare Trust will be able to continue its altruistic endeavours on behalf of these heroic people. This is a charity that is well worth supporting. Of course for its cause but also because of its informative communications.
