World Villages for Children

That’s twice in 2 weeks they have sent me 12p pocket money. Always put it in another charity box. Does the charity – a worthy cause, i don’t need convincing, i will give again- really think i am going to send money every time i get a mail shot? Somebody with IT skills needs to get round there &  reset the computer as they really are wasting so much money on postage not to mention volunteer time, paper (therefore trees). But i will say no more as it’s a subject i have covered ad nauseam already. Sigh.

Red Cross

Have sent me a mag for the first time. Interesting to see the wide range of good works they do. Must be in their good books despite me taking them to task over asking for money for UK flood victims while Bangaldesh had practically turned into Atlantis. Problem is i now worry over RC vollies turning out when local & national government should be dealing with crises in this country. That is what taxes and council tax is for, no? Can i hypothecate my donations please?

Ethiopaid

Works towards long-term self-sufficiency in Ethiopia and i have donated on & off for years. Since 2004 in fact as i keep a notebook with details of who got what – rota has to be fair you see. This month the emphasis was on a home/hospital for the destitute of all ages. Run by nuns tho’. Thinking this one over. Sorry i know it shouldn’t bother me but i have issues over homosexuality & condom use (for hets too, of course) and if those nuns say the former will burn in hell if they don’t mend their ways, and that the latter are the work of the devil then i do not want to fund their taking that attititude.

Anyway, it’s the first week of the month so i did my charity thing ie doling out 5x£10 cheques like the regular little lady bountiful wot i am. This month’s winners were

Tools for Self Reliance: ’Practical Tools for Practical People’

“Working with local organisations in some of the poorest countries in Africa, Tools for Self Reliance refurbishes tools in the UK and then sends them to communities in Africa. We support rural artisans and craftworkers with tools and training so they can improve their businesses. We also collaborate with others to campaign against the causes of poverty.”

How great is that? They actually refurbish old tools so that is a tick for recycling and must send them by sea so get another tick for the low carbon footprint. And the freebie envelopes are tiny. Must give more often.

Botton Village

I see another blogger raves about the Camphill Family Trust & i heartily second all they say. Been with this one since 1991. The newsletters are really interesting and i always pass them around so others can see how good the set-up is. The charity gives a purpose to lives, and the structure ensures houseparents for all. Shame the trust isn’t running S. London, Toxteth, Mosside etc etc

Mercy Ships

See a previous blog to explain what they do & why i am giving.

Amnesty

See blog #6

The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture

Their site explains

“The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture is a human rights organisation providing medical, psychotherapeutic, advocacy and other services as well as practical assistance to survivors of torture and political violence.”

Plus they also do research & publish papers on their findings. So an adjunct to the work of Amnesty in a way. Again, have been giving since 1991. They used to ask supporters to film shows (recall taking some home-baked cookies one evening) and no longer do (don’t even send freebie envelopes – hint hint) so i guess that’s what happens when an organisation grows. Or maybe the conversation went like this “Those cookies were disgusting” “Yeah – let’s not ask her again”.

That’s all folks!
