Tainted love?

Was amused, in a black kind of way, to read in May that Saudi Arabia had given £250m to the UN Food Appeal. Much needed and very welcome i’m sure – but is that a charity donation or a way of money laundering? Wonder if any of that money will end up assisting the families of the some of the guest workers in SA?

This blog is overdue, as should have been written in June. However that means in only 6 weeks since i last blogged on, the following charities have been in touch more than once –
Woodland Trust x3 (especially ironic given they are ostensibly looking to plant & grow trees rather than cause their felling)
Cats Protection League x3
Red Cross x3
PDSA x4 (this despite my never having given them a penny – they think they can wear me down they never played me at paper/stone/water/scissors)
Smile Train x3
World Villages for Children x2
Breadline Africa x2

Is there a logic to this ie “studies have shown that if a charity keeps bombarding householders they will eventually donate”? If that is true, is there a formula that shows that any donation will be in excess of the the costs of sending 47 mailshots? If not, why do it?

Just hope the piece i read in the Professional Fundraising magazine will prove true, that charities are no longer permitted to send us umbrellas and coins etc to persuade us to shell out.!
