Have not had it yet but was delighted to hear this week i have been awarded a £25 a month payrise. Could not possibly spend all that on myself (!) so have decided to up my monthly contribution by a tenner, to £60. (Mr Gates, that is what is known as the ‘widows mite’.)

I am hoping to spend my weekend clearing my friend’s flat since he don’t need it no more. I was told the council charge rent until such time as they can clear out what remains and therefore the more family & friends can do the quicker it is for the local council to act.
From thinking [...]

A very dear friend died recently and us nearest and dearest agreed that – apart from a solitary rose on top of the (disposable, cardboard) coffin – there would be no flowers. Instead all mourners, at the service and pub after, were asked to give to the UK Wolf Conservation Trust,in the dearly departed’s name. He had [...]

As a regular and habitual giver to charity, how should i deal with the kerbcrawling activities of the chuggers ie those who importune one in the street to sign up to a direct debit for a specific charity? I know what i actually do ie avoid eye contact and scuttle past as quickly as possible. [...]

From moaning about those who bombard me with appeals, i am now thinking about those charities to which i made a donation and have heard nothing since. I appreciate my tenner (or if years ago maybe just a fiver) does not count as a kings ransom, but i do wonder that there are charities for [...]

(Wrote this 3rd April and intended to publish then, not sure what happened…
While i have not read the book (yet) i have read several reviews of a book called ‘The Spirit Level’, an examination of how the inequalities in society underlie all our social ills. For all the failed government initiatives, the authors state their belief, with [...]

I have not given to the British Red Cross in 18 months, for a number of reasons. And still the pens and cards and address stickers keep coming. With Breadline Africa i actually e-mailed them to say i wanted no more mail, was advised i would be taken off the mailing list – and still [...]
