Cats in Turkey

Just back from a holiday in Turkey hence the lack of posts.

Part of the holiday was spent in a place called Kalkan, we were last there six years ago and although it is still a pleasant place to visit much of its original charm is being eroded by the considerable speculative development.

One noticeable improvement however has been the sharp reduction in the number of cats around the Old Town. On our past visit these were everywhere; dreadful looking, almost feral creatures that made eating out something of an endurance test. At the time we read that two expats and a local doctor had set up a charity to properly look after the local felines and made a small donation. Clearly their work has been a success, there are still cats around but they look well looked after and their numbers sharply reduced.

This got me thinking; most of the charities I seem to support seem to be involved in “bottomless pit” activity – third world development, medical research etc. I cannot think of anything else I have supported that has brought such dramatic results over a relatively short period. I appreciate the objectives in Kalkan were modest, but perhaps there is room for more short, one off initiatives in the world of charity?. How many UK charities are wound up because their work is successfully completed?
