I have always loved books and read more than some would say was sensible.
Despite getting through a pretty large number each month (mostly modern novels and history in case you are interested), I end up buying even more. I am a sucker for the “three for two” offer and always rationalise that I need to just add just one more book to my amazon order to qualify for free postage. As I type this there is a full shelf next to me of stuff I have promised myself will be whittled down before any more purchases.
I appreciate for most on this planet that they are a luxury and I am very fortunate to have the freedom and income to purchase just about anything I wish to read. I salve my conscience to some extent by making a donation to www.bookaid.org. for every book I buy.
This is a splendid charity, working primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, creating reading and learning opportunities for disadvantaged people. I love the idea of the reverse book club they run. For a £5 donation each month they promise to send 4 books to people who really want to read them, everything from text books to literacy aids. This type of giving. connecting our own actions with the needs of others, always strikes a chord with me.
